Tay Estuary Diary August 2013

We had heavy rain on the opening day of the month but by early afternoon things had dried up and it was more of the same good weather we are getting use too.

The Osprey has been a more frequent visitor to the river of late and we are seeing a few more Lapwings coming in about, by the 12th we were seeing a few skeins of geese arriving back and all the Swifts up in the town were gone a couple of days later.

On the 16th we had the SSPCA back to the estuary again with some more birds from their rescue centre that were ready for releasing back into the wild. There were some Mute Swans and cygnets, along with some Tufted duck ducklings that were released out onto the river and there was a Barn Owl that was let out in one of the big sheds.

As the good weather continued there were good numbers of butterflies to be seen on all the Budleah and there have been high numbers of Bumblebees all over the Rebbecia along the river.

We are seeing a bit more Cabbage Thistle in places and there is some Evening Primrose appeared on a bit of the tide line as well.

The bees in our hives have been busy and after removing a super we have managed to get some more honey spun and jarred.

There has been a lot more grass cutting again this month to keep us busy, and some areas of the marsh got a late cut to open them up a bit for the benefit of the returning Redshank and Snipe.

The paint brushes were also out again and another one of our wooden cobbles got a lick of paint to freshen it up again.

On the 30th we had the stand-up paddle boarders back down at the Fishery. They enjoyed a day out on the river doing a trip down to Incherrit and back, the café supplied them with a lovely hamper lunch to enjoy at the halfway stage. All involved had a great day out.

We had a few more coasters making their way up to Perth Harbour again this month on the bigger tides.

It was to get windier and a bit cooler towards the end of the month, we had the odd shower but it remained mostly dry and the river level remained quite low.
