Tay Estuary Diary July 2013

The good weather continued well into the month and the river level dropped back to its lowest for years.

The good days turned into weeks as we finally got a summer; with the mercury sitting in the high twenties for days on end. Up at the fishery café customers were enjoying their food at the tables outside, soaking up the sun by the riverside.

There are plenty fish showing in the fishery just now but catches have dropped back a bit in the strong sunlight. The weed cutting boat has been busy this month going round the fishery thinning out the growth of weeds in some areas; this is a job that makes for better fishing conditions and there is less chance of fishers getting their lines caught up when landing fish.

There has been a lot more activity out on the water as more people have been taking advantage of the good weather; paddle boarding has been getting a run out on the river up at the Fishery and there have been a few people keen to give it a try.

There has been the odd pleasure boat going up and down the river with people on board taking in the scenery and enjoying the good weather.

The colours along the river have been constantly changing as the seasons move on and the yellow of the Rebeccia is dominating in some areas just now, but the mauve hue of the Bellflowers is showing up well in patches too.

With an abundance of flowers and all this good weather the bees have been very busy round the hives and our new nucleus is coming along just fine.

We have seen a bit more of the Osprey lately and a lot of the birds are onto their second broods now. The swallows are busy feeding more young and there are always more young ducklings appearing about the waterside.

The tractor and cutter have been busy again this month with the grass cutting taking priority on the job front; due to logistics the old barge was in action a couple of times to move the tractor between jobs.

The good weather finally broke after three weeks and we had a lot of rain, thunder and some spectacular lighting for a couple of days, this helped clear the air a bit then it settled back to warm days with a bit of cloud and the odd shower. The ground managed to absorb most of the rainfall and there was only a slight increase in the river level before it was settling back again.

There were bigger tides towards the end of the month which saw a bit more activity up at Perth Harbour with the odd coaster plying its trade along the estuary.
