Tay Estuary Diary August 2026

04 September 2026

The start of the month saw the wet weather continue with some heavy rain at times, strong winds, cooler temperatures and a river level that started to climb, but only by a few inches before it was slowly falling back again.

It was not long before the warmer days returned again, during which time we had a swarm of bees that settled near us for a day before moving on again.

We are seeing more Badger activity in places now where they have been digging the ground up to get at the  wasp bykes underground for a feed. They must have a fair strength to do this when you see how hard and dried out some of the ground is. As usual for this time of year we are seeing various different fungi appearing all over the place, you never know where they will show up next!

It has been an unusual season for a lot of things growing this year, there are rowan trees laden with berries and others with next to no crop at all!

This has been the same with a lot of the fruit trees round about.

The wild flowers keep coming through too with the changing months.

the common Tansy and the Knapweed have been particularly strong in some areas this year which are well used by all the bees and insects. It’s that time again when the firewood supplies need some stocking up for the winter months ahead, now that the grass cutting is easing up a bit, we have had time to  get some wood gathered ready for splitting between our other jobs.

The month drew to a close on a dull, dry mild day, with a river level that has been hovering around the nine inch mark above summer level.
