July 2011

The month started with some very good weather and a falling river level, but this was all to change after a few days when we were hit with some torrential rain and localized flooding.

The river was back in spate for a few days again before settling back, and the good weather returned.

There were a lot of jobs to get on with this month, although the grass cutting takes up most of our time just now. The tractor and strimmers are in constant use some days.

Again the colours along the river banks are changing as more wild flowers come and go, The Rebeccia, Purple loosestrife and assorted Bellflowers are all doing well in places just now, as are the Meadow Cranesbill, Vetch and Marsh Mallow.

Retired boatbuilder Jim Davidson was back on the tools this month doing a repair to one of our older boats (the Locust), a diesel netting cobble, that needed a bit cocking and patching up to counter old age and keep it floating! Hopefully it will be fine for another season or two.

Again we were hit with torrential rain and more localized flooding in mid-month, but it soon settled back into a good spell of weather.

There was a bit more activity on the river at this time, with a few more yachts moving about and the odd pleasure boat doing trips up and down the estuary.

We also had some more coasters plying their trade up at Perth Harbour, with timber being the main cargo just now.

A lot of the birds along the estuary will be on their second broods now, with the common sand pipers, sand martins, swallows and warblers all doing well.

We came across a young buzzard close up at ground level, it had not quite grasped flying yet but the parent bird was keeping an eye on it from not too far away.

The end of the month saw a river at summer level and a nice spell of weather.
