July 2009

It was more of the same as the good weather continued into the start of the month and the river dropped back to summer level.

As the sunshine continued there was plenty of activity around the hives, with the bees making the most of all the wild flowers along the river banks.

There are a few more birds to be seen on the estuary just now with lapwings beginning to gather up in good numbers, and the common sand pipers seemed to have had a good year as we are seeing a lot more young ones about.

Most of our time this month has been spent working on the bothy up at the ponds, and it is progressing with the decorating, electrical work, and outside groundwork (turfing, seeding and slabbing) taking a big step nearer to completion.

Mid-month saw the launch of a booklet “TAY SALMON Net Fishing Memories “.

This booklet was for produced for Fife Rural Partnership, Tay Regeneration Project and Tay Salmon fisheries, and it is available from The Tay Salmon Fisheries Company for £7.50. (please contact 01738 636407 to purchase your copy). The booklet is an interesting read, and should appeal to a lot of people of different ages that have had a connection with the river.

There was a bit more rain in the second half of the month causing the river level to rise slightly, but in the fields round about the farmers were busy and still able to bring in the harvest.

Back at the pond work had also started on another boardwalk taking in a section along the north facing bank.
