Tay Estuary Diary July 2017

The weather pattern from the end of June continued into the start of this month with dry duller days and a bit of breeze, but there was a bit of everything thrown into the mix before July came to an end. The river fluctuated slightly over this time but not enough to make much of a difference.

After the success of our open day last month things have taken off at the Activity Centre. Lots of bookings coming in the staff which has been kept very busy over the last few weeks with lot of positive feedback from everyone enjoying the various activities.

There have also been a few more boat trips enjoyed from the pontoons, but these are restricted a bit by the tide timetable.

A lot of our work programme again this month has been the routine cutting of grass about the place, keeping everything in check and the place tidy. Up at the fishery Dave has been busy out on the weed cutting boat, keeping the water clear for the fishers to enjoy better fishing conditions.

There are plenty of house Martins about this year, but there does not appear to be as many Swallows, and as the summer moves on a lot of the birds are onto their second broods now. There have been a few sightings of the Osprey fishing on the river

also the Otter has been seen at times along at the Willowgate Activity Centre & Cafe. There is evidence of the Beaver at work on some bits of the river but sightings of it are rare! There is a bit more colour about the river banks again as the Purple Loose-trife and Rebeccia have come into their own.

taking over in some areas, always a big hit with all the bees and butterflies on a sunny day.

There were a few heavy showers over the last couple of days but not enough to bother the river level too much.
