Tay Estuary Diary April 2015

We had frost and a cold start to the first day of the month, but it was not long before we were into a good spell of very warm weather.

It was good feeling the warmth of the sun on your back after such a long time, the bees were certainly busy out and about enjoying it. One of our hives is struggling but the other one is doing okay.

There has been a good show of daffodils this year; along the riverside and up at the fishery, makes digging all these holes worthwhile when you see the end result.

It was that time of year again when we spent a bit of time going along the foreshore doing our annual litter pick, it never ceases to amaze me how much rubbish gets washed down the system.

Other jobs done this month included repairs to the boardwalk up at the fishery and putting out more seating round the ponds for the fishers and walkers to use.

It was good to see our swans have nested again this year on one of the islands, hopefully we will see some cygnets in the near future.

There have been a lot of birds returning back to our bit of the estuary over the last few weeks, with the grey Wagtails appearing on the 3rd and the Shell duck on the 8th. The Common Sandpipers were back on the 9th, and Swallows (17th) and house martins (20th) were not far behind.  The Curlews, Yellow Hammers and Oyster Catcher numbers are picking up and there have been plenty butterflies about.

It was good to see the orange Tips going about again. Just when you think we have shaken winter off there was a change in the weather again towards the end of the month and it was back to snow, sleet and hailstones!!
