Tay Estuary Diary June 2014

The month started as the last one ended with a dropping river level and some reasonable weather. The bigger tides saw a few coasters working their way up to Perth Harbour this month to ply their trade.

Cargos included fish meal, timber and woodchip.

Once again grass cutting and strimming took up a lot of our time this month; this was a result of the very mixed weather we have been getting, between some very heavy rain at times.

Then with very warm weather the grass has been growing at a fair old rate this year. It has been full on at times to keep all the pathways clear.

On the 14th & 15th June Willowgate Fishery became part of the Perthshire Adventure Festival Weekend with a whole host of activities including Free Casting Lessons,  Archery, Bush Craft, Canoeing, Paddle Boarding and Kayaking.

We did get a change of scenery for a bit when we went up to help out with the grass cutting at our Cargill rod beat.

We had a good spell of weather when we were up there and it was good to see all the bees out enjoying the different wild flower heads.

There does not appear to be so many Orchids about this year, but we have been seeing a few in different places from previous years!

The Beaver has busy dropping a few young willow trees about the beat, and we are seeing more evidence of the beavers work further down river where bits of dropped trees are being washed down the system. There are still some ducks with a few ducklings in tow that have been lucky enough to avoid the many predators that they face as they go about their daily routine.

Mid-month saw a little rise in the river level but it soon abated and it was back to summer level again. Back down on the estuary there was some flood bank repair work getting underway as a local farmer was getting round to repairing a damaged flood bank caused by a tidal surge on top of a big tide at the turn of the year.

Further down the estuary there are a few young Mute Swans hanging around the Earnmouth area.

There has also been a few sightings of the Osprey in the same area taking fish. The month ended with a showery day and a low river level.
